Artist Biography
I’m a conceptual and visual artist, born and based in New Delhi. I studied industrial and product design, graduating in 2015 with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2016 I began to pursue an art practice that explores various mediums and styles - from intricate bird stipplings to my signature ‘stream of consciousness’ drawing style, to floral, landscape, and abstract paintings, as well as kinetic sculptures and photography.
I take inspiration from intuitive structures that arise and evolve from simple patterns and compositions of nature. My work explores themes of divinity, consciousness, perception, dimensionality, and the self. More generally, the process allows both abstraction and realism to coexist in drawings and paintings, creating cross-referential meaning through the interaction of compositional elements.
As a kinetic sculptor, my experiments with transparency, materiality, and symmetry in tensegrity structures has provided a novel look into multi-dimensional sacred geometries, opening fresh avenues of inquiry. The interest is in using the motion of physical objects as a canvas for the moire effect. My approach is artistic rather than utilitarian or scientific, as I use an iterative design process to sift through inspiration and build up new aesthetics. Unusual questions, varied exposure, and clear thinking in my practice lends perspective onto established concepts. My work begins as a question or set of questions that drive and inform resultant visuals, their medium, and specificity.
I’m a passionate educator, having taught product drawing, geometry, and my own kinetic research at various architecture colleges and design festivals, through talks and workshops. I’ve written a mathematics paper titled ‘3-dimensional moire patterns’, mentored by professors Carlo Sequin and Joseph Clinton. I’ve also worked in design roles with Penguin RandomHouse (2022) and IISc Bangalore (M2D2 lab - 2019-2020). A keen photographer, avid birder, and ornithologist, I recently forayed into the world of butterflies and moths. Chess, tennis, reading, and writing poetry are some of my hobbies.
Artist Statement
How does one embed thought into material, into structure. A structure of thought, so to say, that allows abstract reasoning to develop from a physical object. An external muse for contemplation. Cognitively obvious. Laid bare. Distilled from observation. From patterns that fluctuate, from the fundamental nature of the cosmos. Art as an experience that coaxes out aspects of reality, of the self, from the viewer. That unravels something new on each visit. This is the ideal towards which I strive to portray emotion, feeling, and thought in my artistic practice.
